Propofol (marketed as Diprivan by Fresenius Kabi) is a short-acting, intravenously administered hypnotic/amnestic agent. Its uses include the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia, sedation for mechanically ventilated adults, and procedural sedation. Propofol is also commonly used in veterinary medicine.
Dosage and routes
- Adults: IV 2-2.5 mg/kg, 40mg q 10sec
- Elderly: 1-1.5 mg/kg, 20mg q 10sec
- Maintenance
- Adult: 0.1-0.2mg/ kg/ min 6-12 mg/kg/ hr
- Elderly: 0.05-0.1 mg/kg/ min 3-6 mg/kg/hr
- Critical Care
- Adult: IV 5mg/ kg over 5min, give 5-10 mg/kg/ min over 5- 10 min until pain relieve.
- Available forms: Inj 10mg / ml in 20 ml amp
Side effects
Confusion, agitation, cramping, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, fever, headache, and dizziness.
