Methohexital or methohexitone, (marketed under the brand name Brevital) is a drug which is a barbiturate derivative. It is classified as short-acting, and has a rapid onset of action. It is similar in its effects to sodium thiopental, a drug with which it competed in the market for anaesthetics.
Dosage and routes
- Adult and child: IV 50- 100 mg given 1ml / 5 sec
- Maintenance
- Adult and child: IV 20-40 mg q4-7 min 0.1% sol; cont IV 1gtt/sec 0.2% sol
- Available forms: Inj 500mg, 2.5, 5g
Side effects
Retrograde amnesia, prolonged somnolence, tachycardia, hypotension,myocardial depression, dysrhythmias.
Integ: Chills, shivering, necrosis, pain at injection site.
