Droperidol

droperidol Droperidol table

Droperidol /droʊˈpɛrIdɔːl/ (Inapsine, Droleptan, Dridol, Xomolix, Innovar [combination with fentanyl]) is an antidopaminergic drug used as an antiemetic and antipsychotic. Droperidol is also often used for neuroleptanalgesic anesthesia and sedation in intensive-care treatment.

Dosage and routes

Induction

  • Adults IV/IM 0.22-0.275 mg/kg given with analgesic or general anesthetic; may give 1.25mg –2.5mg additionally
  • Children 2-12 yr ; IV 88-165ug/kg titrated to responses needed

Premedication

  • Adult: IM 2.5-10mg 1/2-1 hr before surgery
  • Child 2-12yr :IM 1-1.5mg/ 20-25 lb

Maintain general anesthesia

  • Adult:IV 1.25-2.5mg

Regional anesthesia adjunct

  • Adult IV/IM 2.5-5mg

Diagnostic procedures without general anesthesia

  • Adult IM 2.5-10mg 1/2-1 hr prior to procedures; 1.25-2.5 mg as needed

Side effects

Dysphoria, sedation, hypotension resulting from peripheral alpha adrenoceptor blockade, prolongation of QT interval which can lead to torsades de pointes, and extrapyramidal side effects such as dystonic reactions/neuroleptic malignant syndrome
