It is a drug used to treat temporary discomforts of the stomach and gastrointestinal tract, such as diarrhea, indigestion, heartburn and nausea. Commonly known as pink bismuth, it is the active ingredient in popular medications such as Pepto-Bismol and, since 2003, in Kaopectate

Dosage and routes

  • Adult: 30 ml or 2 tabs q30 60 min, do not exceed 8 doses for 2 days
  • Child: 10-14 yr 15 ml
  • Available forms: Chewable tablets 262mg; susp 262mg/ 15ml

Side effects

Dark stools, increase fecal impaction.
